Mathaf is usually described as the East side equivalent to Barbir with only 500m between the two checkpoints. The checkpoint similarly operated between 1975 and 1989, although it remained more stable than Barbir due to less changes in groups controlling it. Located next to the Syriac Catholic Church, the checkpoint predominately controlled by the Tyous. Mathaf was infamous for its numerous kidnappings with many accounts referring to the disappeared being transferred to the Lebanese Force's headquarters in Karantina.
