The Syrian were based in Chtaura as of June 1976 during the 2 year war and before their official entrance in November 1976. Chtaura became the HQ of the Syrian army in Lebanon during the war and until 2005. During the battle of Zahle, the Syrians dispersed checkpoints around the outskirts of the city blocking the flow of foodstuffs and other supplies going in and out from Zahle
