Syrian Detention Center

Anyone arrested in Lebanon followed systematically the same circuit from his place of abduction to his place of detention. The last two stages, before arriving to Syria, were Anjar and Chtaura in the Bekaa. Anjar prison was a stable for horses that was requisitioned by the Syrians upon invading Lebanon and transformed into a vast prison and converted the horseshoeing room into a torture chamber, fitted with the most sophisticated instruments of torture. The Anjar prison is not very large because it serves only as a grouping center for the detainees who were either liberated and returned home, or transferred to the prisons inside Syria. The chief of Syrian military intelligence, General Ghazi Kanaan commands personally the Anjar prison, with his assistant General Adnan Balloul, nicknamed the “Beast”.
